Our Process

Typically, the first step is scheduling a site visit and consultation. This will typically take 1.5 hours with one or two of our designers. We then follow up with some notes (observations and thoughts) from our visit.

From there, if a client wishes to go further, we can embark on the design process. This process includes further site visits (ideally during different seasons), communications with key players, meetings, site research, lots of sketches and sharing of ideas back and forth, and finally a map of a design proposal and a design narrative. On a typical site this process might take 30-40 hours with a cost ranging between $1800-$2400. Every site is different, and we would discuss the time and cost expectations ahead of the design. We take a deposit of $600 at the beginning of the design process. Minor adjustments can be made to the design proposal and prior to moving into an installation phase.

Installation costs range widely and can be discussed prior to the design process.

Installations typically occur over several seasons with several phases. We will identify key areas and phases prior to the installation. All planting takes place in the spring and fall. Installing other features and built components often take place in the summer or winter.

Seasonal Earthcraft maintenance is highly recommended for the first 3 years after the installation. Occasionally we continue maintenance after that period depending on circumstances, but our goal is often to put the tending in the hands of the clients after that time. During the first 3-year period, we would be available on site for 1-2 days per season, focused on planting, mulching, composting scything, string trimming, pruning, tending structures, and general problem solving.  Note: we do not mow lawns.
